The project was conceived by me(jetfuel) as a way to play the game early, to practice some Japanese before leaving to study in Tokyo, to avoid potentially bad English localization, and most of all to help Xeno fans around the world enjoy this fine game in a language more familiar to them than Japanese. In the weeks preceding the game's Japanese release, several other fans came out of the Xeno web woodwork to lend their talents, making the project very much a group effort; their names and contributions can be found in the credits section to follow. Several members of the staff have expressed enthusiasm about continuing the Madness Project into further Xenosaga episodes. I, at least, plan to continue working on guides for each installment that comes out. Anyone else is welcome to contribute when the time comes. In order to play, you'll need the game, of course, a Japanese PS2, and this guide. The game and PS2 can be bought at any number of game import shops on the net, or at a real shop in Japan, if you're lucky enough to actually live there. Go ahead and print this guide out, or have it up on your screen if your computer is close enough to your PS2. For ideal enjoyment of the game, please put away all expectations and preconceptions. When faced with an unorthodox decision by the game staff, try to keep an open mind. Most of all, remember that this game has been put together by a large team of very hard-working people who have done their absolute best to bring you a fun game. Credit should be given to CJayC, proprietor of GameFAQs, for providing the venue through which guides like this one can be distributed to the people who need them. +------------------------------------+ | 0.2: CREDITS | +------------------------------------+ The people who bring madness to you. Every single one of these people has been a downright pleasure to work with. Xenosaga Madness roll call: Mr. Henry Jerng: Gracious donation of scene translations from his own guide (www.hhjcollections.com) Mr. Ashley Curtis: Skill/ability lists, story translation, Xenocard info, walkthrough Mr. int: A/V manipulation, Ethos HQ admin, database translation Mr. duckroll: database translation Mr. bebpo: Item lists Mr. Axel5: Menus Mr. Jack Power: AGWS info Mr. U-Kun: Enemy data Mr. jetfuel: Translation, section checking/editing, guide assembly, odds and ends +------------------------------------+ | 0.3: VERSION HISTORY | +------------------------------------+ Changes, updates, future plans. With each update I also go over the whole document to rearrange information and fix little spelling/grammar/formatting errors or awkward translations. 1.2.7 (3.26.03): Added some more changes, some thanks to U-kun and my buddy in Sendai, Mr. Wyrdwad. Changed an inaccuracy in the walkthrough, thanks to Faendryl. Added tips for beating Mintia, as submitted by Tom. 1.2.6 (2.28.03): Added Chapter 0.7, a "Changes" section that details the differences between the original Japanese version and the USA localization. If you catch any, send them in!! 1.2.5 (2.24.03): Added Andy "Bari Bari" Szymanski's translation of Ziggy's final rank before his death. Changed some incorrect Ether titles. Discovered the bit where Albedo quotes _Hamlet_ and changed the line to match the original. Changed some FAQs. Looks like we might have a lot of US-version folks reading this guide soon; hopefully it will be of some use to you all until a US-specific guide is written. 1.2.4 (9.26.02): Finished the rest of the Confrontation with Albedo. Going to do the Blue Cloak bit next, but I don't want to have to fight that dork again. 1.2.3 (9.24.02): Added the Confrontation with Albedo translation, up to the point where you fight him. Fixed some miscellaneous things. 1.2.2 (9.17.02): Added one scene to the Song of Nephilim section. Would have added more, but I got killed by one of those robot crab things. XD 1.2.1 (9.3.02): Someone at cheatcc.com decided that it would be a really good idea to put this guide up at their site with a modified version of the introductory notice; they added their own URL to the list of sites to trust with having the newest version of the guide. Note that they put their own URL into the same paragraph that insists that you must not modify this file in any way. Needless to say, I've sent them a to-the-point email on the matter. 1.2 (8.27.02): Added U-kun's updates enemy info, now with original Japanese enemy names. Finished up "the" Albedo scenes and the appearance of the Song of Nephilim, in the Kookai Foundation Revisited section. It was pretty disturbing to have to watch that stuff over and over again to get the translations right (._.;). 1.1.5 (8.26.02): Started translation of "the" Albedo scenes, in the Kookai Foundation Revisited section; had to stop due to my girlfriend's parents calling me up for lunch on short notice (-_-;). Fixed some dialogue and a FAQ question thanks to Edward Chang; particularly for informing us about "telomeres", which are these things that cap your DNA and cause you to eventually grow old and die. Apparently Albedo's are infinite, or something. I had a pretty full month of doing cool stuff with cool people, but now everyone's gone back to the USA, and my roomie's about to ship off to Burma for a month, so I'll have lots of time to work on the remaining holes in the guide. 1.1 (7.25.02): Added Henry's translations to finish up the Encephalon section; edited names and such to match up with existing scenes. Added counter-boost info. 1.0.1 (7.18.02): Just some little things here and there. 1.0 (7.14.02): Taking a break from finals to update. Fixed wonky formatting on AGWS weapons table. Added U-Kun's excellent, extensive enemy data, with his cool file-folder-looking tables. U-kun is the newest member of our little project, here, but has made a pretty huge contribution. I've decided to go ahead and call this 1.0, as one can now pretty much get through the whole game, understand it for the most part, and max out her character stats, using this guide. There's still a good amount of work to be done, though. *^_^* 0.9 (7.8.02): Tons of new stuff. I've assimilated most of Ashley's Mini-FAQ into this guide, so now there is walkthrough info for the entire game. This merge also brought us the locations of the 18 Segment Addresses and all of the secret character abilities. I'm almost ready to slap a 1.0 an this thing. Thanks go out to Ashley for being so cool and helpful. 0.8.1 (7.7.02): I'm supposed to be working on my final paper for Rel341. Instead I'm typing up how to beat Tiamat in Xenosaga. I'm sure my professor will understand. 0.8 (7.6.02): Several questions answered in the Mysteries section. This is slow- going. Added locations of accessories so that you can collect them all. Added some missing items. 0.7.9 (7.5.02): Translated the first two scenes of the Encephalon section. Also starting to translate the Mysteries section of the Xenosaga Complete Guide. 0.7.7 (6.29.02): Went through all scene translations and put non-dialogue material in parentheses. Started adding (very rough) summaries for each scene. 0.7.5 (6.26.02): The ending has been translated up until the credits. 0.7.2 (6.21.02): Hi! I'm alive! The email section has been added. I'll get to work on more dialogue, too. Thanks to GameFAQs folks for keeping me motivated. 0.7 (5.8.02): The End translation is complete up to the boss fight. 0.6.3 (4.23.02): Whoa! This thing's getting unwieldy. I fixed some messed up section labels and moved some scenes into the correct sections. 0.6.2 (4.22.02): Added *huge* dialogue translations to the Gnosis Mothership and Durandal sections as donated by Henry. Cleaned up some other stuff as well. I've finally actually finished the game, and I'll be going back through it again, translating more scenes, summarizing stuff, and writing walkthroughs. I'll admit, too, that I got a little misty at the end, there. 0.5.7 (4.12.02): Added Ashley's ridiculous Xenocard card list. 0.5.5 (4.10.02): This is kind of crappy; we still can't move into our apartment in Shinjuku and I'm afraid that hooking up video games here in the house where I'm staying would be a little un-guest-like of me. So this time it's just more updates from other staff members: the status effects section and Ashley's Xenocard explanation have arrived. As soon as I can hook up my PS2 comfortably, I'd like to *finish the dang game* and then go through it again, this time writing down at least a summary of each scene. 0.5.2 (4.3.02): Sorry for the lapse in updates; I'm still getting oriented here in Tokyo. I haven't even got my PS2 set up yet. Added Jack's AGWS accessories list, and a lot more U.M.N. translations from int. 0.5 (3.25.02): Added tips for fighting Albedo. More Song of Nephilim scene translation. Added FAQ section. 0.4.7 (3.23.02): Added Henry's scenes to the Gnosis Mothership section. Started translating the Song of Nephilim scene in the Kookai Foundation Revisited section. Added Ashley's Skill section. 0.4.5 (3.20.02): Ziggy bio. Added Jack's full AGWS unit and equipment lists. Translated some more of the Turning point scene in the Kookai foundation section, but those babbling council members are going to cause me kanji nightmares. 0.4.1 (3.18.02): Henry finished The Long One. 0.4 (3.16.02): Henry Jerng is back on board! He'll be lending his spectacular transation talents to our little project, here, so look for really dang good scene translations. Added Henry's translation of the long scene between the Woglinde and Elsa. Seriously fixed up the wonky Turning Point scene in the Kookai Foundation section, thanks to Ms. Hiroko Matsuo. *^_^* Added some brief tips on the Elsa boss. If there are any bosses or sections of the game boggling you, let us know (madness@metalbat.com) and we'll write it up. 0.3.6 (3.15.02): Started translating the Turning Point scene on the Durandal. It's boggling me. More minigame info. Fixed bad bytes in some Japanese text thanks to GameFAQs Contributor Issues. 0.3.5 (3.13.02): Decided to cover sections in a non-linear fashion. This way, more important scenes and areas get covered first, so that we're not wasting our time on technobabble scenes while players wait try to figure out what the heck's going on with the storyline. If there's a part of the game that you'd like to see covered next, please let us know (madness@metalbat.com). Started Minigame section. 0.3.3 (3.12.02): Added deathblow attack attributes and accessory list by Ashley. Finished post-tutorial scene translation. 0.3.1 (3.12.02): Almost done with the post-tutorial cut scene. Being able to translate on the train is very nice; sasuga PowerBook. Addressed the, uh, "secret feature" in the character view screen. Also, thanks to John Townsend for some very thorough intro dialogue corrections. 0.3 (3.10.02): My DV bridge showed up! Started translating scenes today; the introduction is finished! Yeah! Scene translation should be pretty smooth from here on out. Also started the U.M.N. database section as submitted by duckroll and int; These guys put the "Madness" in "Xenosaga Madness Project". Ashley's corrections to the Battle section. 0.2.6 (3.9.02): Made some corrections; thanks to Gabe Silverstone on the KOS-MOS bio. duckroll's corrections to the Ether/Deathblow lists. 0.2.5 (3.8.02): Bebpo's complete usable item list. Removed plugin misinformation. Made menu hierarchies and such more readable (I hope). 0.2 (3.7.02): Complete battle explanation. Exploration explanation. Say that three times fast. 0.1.5 (3.7.02): Found that stupid "Goddess's Shield" kanji. Started Deathblow explanation. Ashley more or less finished attacks and Ethers; jet working on iffy katakana titles. Future plans: start serious story/walkthrough once DV bridge arrives. Maybe start a glossary. 0.1.1 (3.6.02): Fixed small errors. AGWS and Ether menu explanation. Moved tutorial to Walkthrough section. 0.1 (3.5.02): Jr. and chaos bios. Extensive menu details. Updated attacks. Ethers. Complete tutorial translation. Figured out the name of the guy who looks like Henry Rollins. 0.0.6 (3.4.02): More items listed. Corrected MOMO bio. 0.0.5 (3.4.02): Part of intro translation. Started item list. Started attacks/deathblow lists. Guide conventions. Menu translation. 0.0.2 (2.27.02): Shion and MOMO bios. Game notes. 0.0.1 (2.25.02): Guide skeleton assembled. Story overview. KOS-MOS bio. Need to add duckroll's battle and ether info, and Ashley's Shion bio. +------------------------------------+ | 0.4: NOTES | +------------------------------------+ Real-world background on the game itself and other miscellaneous info. _Xenosaga Episode I_ _Der Wille zur Macht / 力への意志 / The Will to Power_ The game was released in Japan on February 28, 2002, in both regular and Limited(LE) editions. The LE contains an art book, a Vector keychain, a binder, and a KOS-MOS figurine; both editions contain the game on a dual-layer DVD for the Sony Playstation 2. Monolith Soft, backed by Namco, has developed the game with a staff including of a number of members from the original Xenogears team. There are some other Xenosaga guides up on GameFAQs. If there's something that's not yet addressed here, you might want to go check it out. If you are working on writing up some section of the game and you'd like to submit it to the Madness Project, feel free to do so; much of this guide came from readers coming aboard and writing their own sections. Also, a good amount of the dialogue translations that appear in this guide were donated by Henry Jerng, from his own guide, also available on GameFAQs. Check that out, too. The non-competitive atmosphere around here is so nice. *^_^* +------------------------------------+ | 0.5: GUIDE CONVENTIONS | +------------------------------------+ Key info used throughout the guide. This guide makes use of Japanese-formatted text so that you can compare English translations with their Japanese counterparts on the game screen. Viewing of these characters requires a Japanese OS, Japanese support installed in your regular OS, or a special third party application that allows you to read Japanese. MacOS 9 and X come with full Japanese support ready to install from the CD. On recent Windows releases it should be fairly easy to install Japanese support as well. If you're on Linux or something then you're probably smart enough to figure it out. Look around your OS's support sites for more info on this, or look around software download sites for third party Japanese language applications. If you haven't got Japanese support, those bits will simply look like garbled crap and you can ignore them. Unless otherwise noted, the following symbols will be used for controller commands: S = Square T = Triangle O = Circle X = X +------------------------------------+ | 0.6: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS | +------------------------------------+ These questions are asked pretty frequently. So don't ask 'em anymore. ^_^ __When is this game coming out in North America/Europe?__ February 26, 2002. Mark your calendars. __Do I need a Japanese PS2 to play the Japanese version? / Can I mod my US/European PS2 to play it?__ Some claim to have had success with certain mod chips, but this is a very dodgy topic. Your best bet really is to get a Japanese PS2. PS2 mod chips are very hard to install, could possibly ruin your system, annoy Sony greatly, and will likely not work for every game that you want to play. Import gaming is expensive. If you can't afford a Japanese PS2, it might be time to find a new, cheaper, hobby. __What is the connection between Xenosaga and Xenogears/Perfect Works?__ Director Tetsuya Takahashi has said that Xenosaga is his chance to go back and create the story that Xenogears was originally supposed to be a part of. He has said, "I've pressed the reset button!". This means that Xenosaga and Xenogears will not necessarily match up. So far there haven't been any blatant contradictions, but this could just be because Perfect Works was pretty vague about its Episode I timeline. We might end up with a very, very different mythos than what we've read in Perfect Works and seen in Xenogears. Or we might get to Episode V and find that it's Xenogears all over again. The fact is that we can't know just yet how connected they are. Though, it would be extremely cool to play with Lacan and Krelian in your party. Oh man, that would be so cool. __Monolith can't use any Xenogears characters or game elements because it's owned by Square, right?__ Monolith and Square are on good terms. A substantial amount of Xenogears-related material, including copyrighted material like character designs and specific names, has appeared in the Saga already. This suggests that Monolith has permission to use at least some of the material from XG. __Is it true that this game didn't sell very well?__ The game didn't reach expected sales. There is an ongoing debate at the GameFAQs message boards about just how big of a problem that is. A good number of copies have sold, though, and Episode II is well into development. Don't worry. Yet. __Should I buy this game?__ Personally, I say yes. The more people that buy it, the more likely it is that I'll get to play the rest of the series. ^_^ Really, though, read through this guide a bit, and read some reviews at GameFAQs; that's what they're for. For an idea of how much I personally like this game, look at the size of this guide. ^_^ __Has this game been censored for the US version?__ There are three scenes that have been slightly modified. All of them involve Albedo and MOMO. But you're not concerned with that, you've got the Japanese version, right? +------------------------------------+ | 0.7: USA VERSION CHANGES | +------------------------------------+ A little list of what's been changed between the JP version and USA version, by int and jetfuel. __THE EDITS__ (from Zenosaga.com) The dialogues were slightly edited to reflect the new changes in the cut scenes. And when we use the word slightly, we use it with emphasis. Really, we are serious! For the most part, the entire dialogue sequence remained in tact. If you are interested in what was said in the original uncut Japanese version, read jetfuel’s Xenosaga Madness Project. To start, there are a total of three (count that: three) cut scenes edited for the final Xenosaga release. All three movies involved Albedo and MOMO. The first movie depicts Albedo dismembering his arm and head in front of MOMO. At the beginning of this particular scene, Albedo holds a dead Kirschwasser in his arm. In the Japanese version, he twists the dead Kirschwasser’s arm (which was coupled with a bone-crushing sound effect) before throwing its lifeless body to the ground. In the US version, Albedo holds the dysfunctional Kirschwasser’s arm and let its arm drop, causing the bone crushing sound. We do not see Albedo throwing the Kirschwasser corpse, but we do hear the thud that is indicative of it. In the Japanese version, Albedo was shown waving a knife around MOMO’s face prior to slashing his own arm off (up to his elbow). In the edited version, Albedo is seen “ripping” his own arm off with his bare hand. The blood and the sound of flesh ripping in this movie remained in tact. Later in the same scene of the Japanese version, Albedo began cutting his own head off with his knife. When his head dropped to the ground we can hear Albedo talking to MOMO. However, we cannot see his dislocated head since it is covered by an obvious black censor block disguised as a background shadow. In the edited version, Albedo used his two hands to twist his head off from his neck. After it dropped to the ground in front of MOMO, we can witness the head of Albedo talking to MOMO with his body erect and towering just behind the talking head. The second movie is rather short. It shows Albedo’s initial attempt to interact with MOMO’s subconscious mind. The Japanese version shows Albedo’s hand liquefy before he plunges it into MOMO’s abdomen. While he does his searching inside of MOMO, he also projects an ominous sexually gratified facial expression (dare we say orgasmically gratified facial expression!). In the edited version, his hand simply hovers over MOMO’s face and emits a pinkish form of energy waves. This energy withdraws consciousness from MOMO. Albedo’s (sexually) gratified facial expressions were also discretely shortened. The third movie involves the entire party, but more significantly, Jr. in a confrontation with Albedo. Once again, Albedo does his “searching” inside of MOMO with his bare hand in the Japanese Xenosaga. In the edited version, Albedo is depicted with his hand hovering over MOMO’s face withdrawing her consciousness. The ominous sexually gratified facial expression of Albedo returns in the Japanese Xenosaga but was “clipped” in the edited version. __ITEM NAMES__ In an apparent attempt to be more intuitive, Namco has chosen to forego the original item names for more descriptive ones. The Aqua/Rose/Zeta/etc. convention comes originally from Xenogears, and fans were happy to see some familiar names in the Japanese version of Xenosaga. The USA version, however, has the following changes: ORIGINAL NAME -> US VERSION NAME Aquagist -> Med Kit Rosegist -> Ether Pack Zetagist -> Revive Escape Ball -> Escape Pack Space Tent -> Biosphere TP Drug, etc. -> Tech. Upgrade, etc. Personally, I find this rather lame. __DEATHBLOWS, ETC.__ This is less of a change than another inconsistency with Xenogears. The original Japanese Xenogears had attacks called 必殺技("hissatsuwaza", or "sure-kill-move"). This was translated in the USA version of Xenogears as "Deathblow", a fine and accurate translation. Xenosaga also includes 必殺技, as an obvious nod to Xenogears, but it has been translated in the USA version as the much lamer "Tech Attack". Between this and the item names I can only wonder if the Xenosaga localization team ever played Xenogears. Another inconsistency with Xenogears is the spelling of "Vanderkaum", which has been changed to "Vanderkam". Also, the names of Shion's summon Ethers, obvious homages to Xenogears' Elements characters, Serephita, Dominia, Tolone, and Kelvena, have been mistransliterated. Erde Kaiser should have been El Derkaiser, a reference to Xenogears' Omnigears. __CAMERA TRICK__ The up-skirt camera trick involving the second controller on the character info screen has been removed. This is a lesson in the differences between the USA and Japan. __BLOOD__ On the Woglinde, there are scenes in which Gnosis are beating on human corpses. In the original, each blow produced a spurt of blood. In the USA version, the blood on the floor remains, but no blood spurts out. __TV__ When you trick the Gnosis by turning on a television screen in the Woglinde, the display was changed from a Monty-Python-esque drawing to a couple of boring human figures. __MINOR DIALOGUE CHANGES__ Mathews complains about missing the Seraphim Sisters concert, rather than the Spice Sisters. __SPAM__ Instead of getting a spam email advertising Klonoa, you get one advertising Tekken 4. __NAMES__ Andrew Cherenkov is referred to by his last name. Hakase is now Professor. Shion's Procurator, U-kun, has had his name changed to the utterly uninspired and lame "Bunnie". I guess US consumers just aren't ready for characters named U-kun. The good news is that if you email this "bunnie" in real life (bunnie@namco.com), you can get a free keychain. That is, if you were one of the first 1000, which you probably won't be, now. __ROBOTS__ For some reason, all of the robots in the professor's lab under the Kookai AGWS shop have been dismantled. __SPELLING/ENGLISH__ Some awkward English has been changed: "System Under Starting", "You Shall Be As A God", etc. The funniest and most unexpected correction was to Mathews' hat. Rather than replacing or removing the bizarre message, they simply added the indefinite article to make it correctly read, "CAUTION: I AM A BOOZER; BANZAI! BANZAI!". Brilliant. Kookai is now Kukai, which amittedly looks better to native English speakers. Jr.'s victory phrase, "go ahead make my day", was replaced with "sayonara, baby!". +--------------------------------------------------------+ | BOOK 1: "SOFT" GAME DATA | +--------------------------------------------------------+ Background, plot, character bios, and other subjective fluff. +------------------------------------+ | 1.0: STORY OVERVIEW | +------------------------------------+ As translated from Monolith's site by int and Ashley: In the year 20XX AD. Through one man's effort, ruins were discovered at Turkana Lake, Africa. A very, very ancient relic was found amongst the ruins. The relic was later called "Phenomenon Mutation Engine", Zohar. In the distant future after the discovery of Zohar, mankind has no choice but to abandon the Earth due to a 'certain reason'. In space, 4,000 years after the discovery of Zohar, where the memories of Earth have long been forgotten this sets the stage for the story of Xenosaga. In this era, the sanctity of humanity is threatened by a mysterious existence known as the "Gnosis". The groups of Gnosis exhibit clear hostility as they attack humanity. Humanity quickly develops the AGWS and the Android "KOS- MOS" system to combat it (the Gnosis). One woman, the human race and the Gnosis find themselves in conflict centered around presence of Zohar. +------------------------------------+ | 1.1: CHARACTER PROFILES | +------------------------------------+ As translated from Monolith's site by Ashley and jetfuel: __Shion Uzuki__ Sex: Female Height: 163cm Weight: 48kg Age: 22 Bio: Shion is the head engineer of the "KOS-MOS" project inside Vector, the number one development agency. In the beginning of the story, Shion is dispatched to outer space by Vector, to be in charge of the investigation of a planet which has disappeared, and to test the KOS-MOS project. The project is being conducted jointly by the government and the private sector. From early on, since her birth, there has been a long history of many wars around and in her hometown. Both of her parents are dead, also 2 years ago she lost her first love in an accident. It should have been a very tough experience for her. However she hasn't been troubled by it very much and she has never revealed her hurt feelings to anyone else. She does everything with a positive attitude, and this tends to be taken just as simple optimism. However her positive attitude is really the strongest resistance to all the experiences she's had in the past. It's also the proof that she is not restrained by the ghosts of her past, and the reason for her sheer volition to live today first and then tomorrow. Shion is a woman with "strong and mighty" personality, who tends to push her coworkers to move ahead aggressively. Although this quality is also kind of an attraction, she denies it about herself. However, as being the KOS-MOS project's head engineer, she is thought of as just a Muse. The fact is that she is a pretty woman. Because of this many of her male coworkers take a fancy to her. __KOS-MOS__ Sex: Female Height: 167 cm Weight: 92kg Age: Appearance of approximately 18 years. Bio: Key girl throughout the Xenosaga series. A female-type battle android developed by the galactic conglomerate "Vector". Created without the artificial- human Realien technique, she is a unique being composed entirely of mechanical parts. Created as a battle system for use against the Gnosis by the pilgrimage fleet, "KOS-MOS" is a general project title rather than a name. She is devoted to the three priorities of logic, the establishment, and duty, and to guarding her creator Shion unconditionally. In order to facilitate communication with others, she implements a "personality imitation OS". Her name means "order". __chaos__ Sex: Male Height: 169 cm Weight: 53kg Age: Appearance of approximately 18 years. Bio: A key person throughout the Xenosaga Series. Chaos is slender, and always wears a gloomy expression. He seems to have some kind of quality that sees through everything. His philosophical style of speech is hard for others to understand. He has the appearance of a 16 year old, but his age is unknown. His amber colored eyes and silver hair make him very special. Choas never talks about his past in detail. So no one knows his background, including himself because of some memory blackouts. This is why everything about him is wrapped with mystery. "Chaos" is his name. __MOMO__ Sex: Female Height: 141cm Weight: 36kg Age: Appearance of about 12 years. Bio: The only way to capture a Gnosis is to use a "special observer". To capture the Gnosis an observation-type ReAlien prototype was developed. Joachim Mizrahi and Juli Mizrahi created the UTIC, a mechanics organization. Through this they created M.O.M.O. (Multiple Observative Mimetic Organicus), which is modeled after the appearance of Sakura Mizrahi, their deceased daughter. By accumulating good deeds, she hopes to fulfill her dream of meeting her father Joachim in heaven. __Jr.__ Sex: Male Height: 140cm Weight: 38kg Age: Looks about 12 years old Jr. represents the board of directors for the Kookai Foundation. The Kookai Foundation is a financial group rooted within the independent state of Miltia. Miltia is a member of the Galaxy Federation. Jr. appears to be 12 years old. However no one knows his real age. Despite his childlike appearance, inside he is just the opposite. He's filled with very extensive knowledge. But sometimes he asks very child-like questions, at the same time making remarks about the true nature of things. Collecting old books and rare guns (from our period) is Jr.'s hobby. __Ziggy__ Sex: Male Height: 191cm Age: 98 years have passed since he donated his body to science. (Appears to be 30 years old) A battle cyborg charged with the task of escorting 100-Type Observational Realien "M.O.M.O.". In the year 4667 T.C., at the age of 30, after donating his body to science, he was deployed to the contact subcommittee for use as a battle cyborg. While alive, his last rank held was "Commander, Federation Police 1875th Special Operations Force Headquarters Detachment". Ziggy becomes commissioned by the federal subcommittee to personally rescue M.O.M.O. +------------------------------------+ | 1.2: U.M.N. DATABASE TRANSLATION | +------------------------------------+ The somebody-at-Monolith-Soft-deserves-a-raise, in-game glossary, as translated by int and duckroll. Archetype - In Jungian psychology, an inherited pattern of thought or symbolic imagery derived from the past collective experience and present in the individual unconscious. Subconsciously responsible for the operation of our instincts and emotions. In the story, this is the name of the KOS-MOS prototype assigned to Kevin. Adaria - One of the Galaxy Federation's planet outposts. The closest planet from the Woglinde space disaster site. Relay point for the Transfer Column to Senir. Attract Inhibitor - Zohar Emulator functionality obstruction device. In biochemistry it refers to the substance (Inhibitor) that obstructs the function of an enzyme. Abyss - The abyss literally refers to either a deep, dark hole or Hell. In the story, it refers to the occurance of a double blackhole in Old Mircea space. Arashi no naka wa kura - "It was very dark, and the wind howled horribly around her", from L.F. Baum's 'The Wizard of Oz' (1900 AD). Albedo - Albedo Piasora. Born in TC 4741, 26 years old. In CG Jung's 'Psychology and Alchemy', it refers to the process in Alchemy known as the whitening. He has milky white hair. Also known as U.R.T.V. Individual #667. Albedo's machine - For now, the name and detailed data on this machine is unknown. Exceeding 10 meters in size, the D.S.S.S. and other details are unknown, and with one attack it can destroy several thousand meters worth of Gnosis. Either the machine is different from the AGWS or the main engine is not a normal generator but a transfer model generator type. Allen Ridgely - Born in TC 4743. 24 years old. Secondary Chief of the Operation System development sector coordinating the KOS-MOS development program in Vector's Primary Development Bureau. After graduating from Boromeo, joined Vector's Primary Development Bureau. Although two years the senior of Shion in age, in Vector he's one year her junior. It appears that he comes from a wealthy family background, but he has since left that behind and does not wish to dwell on his past. His hobby is fishing. Andrew - Born in TC 4731. 36 years old. Lieutenant Colonel in the Federation Force marines division. Serves as the second-in-command of the cruiser Woglinde, a deep man with many layers. Android - The term android was first used by the French author Villiers de L'Isle Adam (1838-1889) in his work 'Tomorrow's Eve', featuring a man-made human-like robot named Hadaly. As said by the officer in the story, "In this age of Realien advancement, who knows what goes on in the mind of those responsible for these mechanical dolls" --- 400番台のプログラム (yonhyakubandai no puroguramu) / 400th Unit Program - A program designed to measure KOS-MOS' combat abilities. ライフポッド (raifu poddo) / Life Pod - Life boat. There was one remaining on the Woglinde when Shion escaped, though it was necessary and expected to carry a considerable number of life pods. Life pods have a fixed capacity of two people and was designed to support and sustain life for about 500 hours. There appeared to be problems associated with the oxygen remainder in the Life Pod which Shion boarded. ライフリサイクルの変異体 (raifurisaikuru no hen'itai) / Life Recycling Mutant - The biological systems, including the genes and the cranial nervous system that becomes excessively modified during the process of Life Recycling. Although mutations commonly affects the mind, depending on the degree of the mutations, the person may exhibit extraordinary abilities from super-ethereal abilities to prolonged body functions. In the case of Andrew, he was given a second adjustment after he was born from artificial insemination and gene modification. He was later sent to the battlefield as part of the Military special Infantry Training Program. ライフリサイクル法 (raifurisaikuruhou) / Life Recycling Method - Submitted as a Bill to the Federation Parliament in T.C. 4590 and passed 91 years later. It was later enacted as a law. During that time, cyborg technology has reached its zenith and human resource was rapidly depleting. It was executed as an "Effective Use" of human resource law. As time passed, the range in interpretation of the law itself was expanded. It later became the alternative to the cloning of genes and cranial nervous system of a person. The methods differentiated until it reached the area of taboo. This law was enacted for as many as 160 years, until being abolished in T.C. 4754. ラインの乙女 (rain no otome) / Rhine Maidens - Woglinde, Welgunde and Flosshilde. According to "Das Rheingold", the opening to the Opera "Ring des Nibelungen" by Richard Wagner, the three sisters that guard the Rhine Gold which lies beneath the riverbed. In Xenosaga, this name crowns the newly-built Vector warships. The super-sized warships totalling over 8,000 meters in length with its bow equipped with special anti-Gnosis weapons. There are basically no differentiation in structure and performance because they are similar ships. The Woglinde, which was loaned to the GFG Defense Force to collect data in the opening also became the first Rhine Maiden to be destroyed. The area that corresponds to the bridge on each warship is structurally the same; a raised and isolated block installed on the frontal base of the body, like that of the Woglinde. ラピス・ローマン大尉 (rabisu rouman taii) / Captain Ravis Royman - Born on T.C. 4738, 29 years old. Galactic Federation Government special operation commander and captain of the Intelligence Bureau. Subordinate of Helmar, respresentative of the Second Miltia Government. ラビュリントス (labyurintosu) / Labyrinthos - A laybrinth constructed on Daedalus in Crete to confine the half-man half-bull monster known as the Minotaur. It is uncertain as to why the name was given to a U-TIC facility. In etymology, "Labrys" refers to a Greek term meaning "double-edged axe". リアクタールーム (riakutaa ruumu) / Reactor Room - The compartment of the Woglinde where the main engine is stored. Synonymous with the engine room. リアルモード (riaru moudo) / Real Mode - Datas collected from Gnosis used on simulated environments. リロード (riroudo) / Reload - Originally used to describe the loading of a bullet into the cylinder of a revolver. Here, the terms is used to describe the re- filling of operative energy. ルベド (rubedo) / Rubedo - From C.G. Jung's "Psychology and Alchemy", the process of turning red in alchemy. U.R.T.V. individual No. 666 (Jr.) differs from other U.R.T.V. due to its crimson red hair. Considerably smaller in size compared to Gaignun, he is given a pseudo-name of Gaignun Jr. レアリエン (rearien) / Realien - Synthetic humans. It is written as 'REALIEN'. An existence strictly constructed from molecular engineering; the body structure consists of various types of materials, depending on the Realien type usage classification, including silicon and depening on type: from human-type with an additional carbon-based composite, to types utilizing liquid metal base. Most of the realiens working on the Woglinde were hybrid types produced by Vector. Their bodies are composed of a synthesized carbon and silicon material. After the Miltia dispute, emotional control are not administered to Realiens deployed on environments subjected to severe circumstances, such as armies or planetary remodelling. Basic human rights are also legally recognized. However, due to a few disagreements and biases during the establishment of Realiean Rights, Realiens seem to have the tendency to adopt the same personality. Part of this biased treament states that Realiens are consequentially inferior to humans, are restricted to perform the abilities respective to their types, and are not able to commit crimes. The key program, aka, the central nervous system are all OEM of Vector. This is the Black Box, which controls the design, range and dimension of the 'Mente' (mind). It can only be adjusted at the Vector Headquarters. 連結実験準備 (renrakujikkenjunbi) / Connection Experiment Preparation - Zohar Emulator initiation experiment carried out by Andrew. During communication transmissions, the 'process of connecting the existence to Zohar' was mentioned. 連邦艦隊 (renpoukantai) / Federation Fleet - Refers to the armada of space battleships owned by the Galactic Federation Government military. In the Federation Fleet, the navy and space marines are integrated to form a singular Federal Military Defense League. The fleets that are deployed to a space region consists of one of two divisions, the space army and the Marines. There is another special operation division not included in this fleet. 連邦艦隊司令 (renpoukantaishirei) / Federation Fleet Commander - Gedalya District Fleet commander. Faithful to duty and discipline, ranking as General Admiral. Separated from younger brother during childhood. 連邦議会 (renpougikai) / Federation Parliament - 10,000 political representatives from different planetary states congregate for political and strategic meetings. Represenatives are UMN'ed to Fifth Jerusalem, the central capital and the main planet of the enitre galactic government. 連邦警察 (renpoukeisatsu) / Federation Police - Shortened term for "Galatic Government Federation Police Force". Basic architecture is similar to the modern police system we know, except it is applied in space. In the past, Ziggy belonged to the Special strategy command dispatchment corps which conducts anti-terrorism operations, VIP escorts and rescue missions. ロジカルドライブ (rojikaru doraibu) / Logic Drive - Logical propeller. A new spaceship propeller replacing the reactor-type. It works by rewriting the phase of space in the direction of travel. Because miniaturization is relatively easy, carrier aircraft and A.G.W.S. are adopting this new type of generator. ロスト・エルサレム (rosto eusaremu) / Lost Jerusalem - Mankind's home planet, lost for thousands of years. The Earth. Presently, it is unknown whether it still exists. Y資料 (Y-shiryou) / Y-Data (shiryou translates to "Materials" or "Data") - The research data that Joachim left. Both U-TIC and the Contact Sub Committee are actively searching for this data. In the story, it is assumed the data lies deep in M.O.M.O.'s memories. From the dialogues, it seems to have significance in Project Zohar. 惑星アリアドネ (wakusei Ariadne) / Planet Ariadne - 1.5 billion inhabitants. A planet under the league of the Galactic Federation Government which disappeared upon the experimentation of a Zohar Emulator. There were U-TIC research facilities on this planet. Andrew was placed on this planet after receiving Life Recycling treatment. +------------------------------------+ | 1.3: MYSTERIES | +------------------------------------+ In the back of the Xenosaga Complete Guide, there is a section titled, "The MYSTERY in which it was sealed". It's a list of questions about the storyline and some mildly helpful responses. Here is that section as painstakingly translated by jetfuel. The remaining enigmas. The fixated past, the decided future, the present wavering factors that can change the future. The tale being spun. The phenomena waiting as in an ambush. (intro unfinished) __What is Zohar?__ Zohar. An object referred to in the Shining Light scripture of Kabbalah. It seems to contine to exist in perpetuity. Humans who could not procure the Original Zohar instead construct Zohar Emulators. However, even the copies of the Original Zohar manufactured by humans cause a person who touches them to vanish; as well, they have the power to obliterate a planet, and to summon Gnosis. Why is it called the Phenomenon Mutation Engine? Does it have the power to derive one future from the infinite number of possible phenomena? Or, can it change the laws of phenomena that exist in our own dimension? __For what purpose was the Zohar Relic created?__ The Zohar Relic discovered on the Earth in the year 20XX: who created it, and why? The relic found on the shore of lake Turkana in Kenya was obviously created by humans. The structure that was sunk into the middle of the lake. It seems like it can be explained as ancient Zohar isolation-storage equipment, but then, who created it? It was an ancient device with systems that differ greatly from our human technology. Also, what was the role of the activation key, the small Zohar-shaped plate possessed by the discoverer? Also, what was the light that shot up into the air from the Zohar? What is the meaning of the rain that then fell on the earth? __What is the relation between Virgil and Realiens?__ Virgil, Star Cluster Federation First Lieutenant stationed on the Woglinde, is the guy who said to Shion, "There's no need to try to understand Realiens". However, in the Miltia Dispute of 14 years ago, he was dismantling Realiens in both hardware and software. Moreover, he has adopted that into his own body. Assimilation. Why would a man who assimilated them in order to understand them in a deeper way, say "There's no need to try to understand"? Why is he so negative toward trying to understand Realiens? What is his relation to Febronia, who he saw in his dying moment on the Woglinde? __What is the reason that Shion did not turn into a Gnosis?__ According to Jr., "people who have come into direct contact with a Gnosis either die by turning into a pillar of salt [Sodom/Gomorrah, anyone? -j] or they turn into a Gnosis", with no exception. However, Shion came into direct contact with a Gnosis on the Woglinde, and this has not happened to her. If Shion has escaped from death and tranformation, will there be some other effect? Is her ability to sense the Song of Nephilim one part of this effect? Can her ability to sense KOS-MOS's location when escaping from Proto Merkabah also be explained by this? __What is the meaning of what Andrew said at Higan?__ (According to my dictionary, Higan is the equinoctial week, when Buddhist services are held. This question seems to refer to Andrew when he shows up on the beach in some alternate world. I'm not sure what equinoxes have to do with this.) +--------------------------------------------------------+ | BOOK 2: "HARD" GAME DATA | +--------------------------------------------------------+ Stats, diagrams, mechanics, and other objective material. +------------------------------------+ | 2.1: EXPLORATION | +------------------------------------+ As explained by jetfuel When running around the various locations of the game, there are a few things to keep in mind. __Movement__ Walk around with the left analog stick, unless you are old-school and you like the directional pad. Pushing the stick further in one direction makes your character walk faster, then jog, then run. Holding R2 will put you in walk-only mode, which is useful for sneaking around enemies. Coming into contact with an enemy will put you into a battle. __The O Button__ Hit O to open doors, talk to people, open boxes, take items, hit big red switches, read maps, activate cranes, or do pretty much anything else that involves interaction with the environment around your character. __Save points__ The big rotating yellow things are save points, and you can save your game at them by hitting O. You may also recover your characters' stats at one by using a スペーステント / Space Tent. If the save point has a blue plate attached to the top of it, then it has few additional features: you can play Xenocard, play AGWS battling, visit the casino (see Book 5 for info on these games), or use the E.V.S. (see chapter 2.8) __Shopping__ The big rotating silver things are shops. You can buy or sell items and equipment there. __Blowing Stuff Up__ You can use the U.M.N. to blow stuff up. If your character passes by stuff that can be blown up, a blue indicator will appear and a sound will play. Hit S to blow that stuff up. You may open up new areas, discover items, or encounter enemies when blowing stuff up. Some stuff, when blown up, will release some kind of temporary ill effect for your enemies on the field (lightning, fire, etc.). If you can lure an enemy into one of these, then the effect will be displayed. If you then fight the enemy, it will be at an appropriate disadvantage. __Menu__ You can call up your main menu by hitting T. This menu is explained in detail in chapter 2.8. __Radar__ In the lower right corner, there is a blue radar screen. Your character's location and facing are indicated by a red triangle. Enemies are indicated by yellow triangles. Non-hostile characters are indicated by green triangles. Yes, the red/yellow designation seems counter-intuitive. I guess Japanese have different connotations for these colors. +------------------------------------+ | 2.2: BATTLE | +------------------------------------+ As explained by jetfuel and Ashley Let's take a look at Xenosaga's excellent battle system. __Attacking__ Basically, you have two kinds of attacks: short range and long range. When it is your character's turn in battle, you can choose a target and then hit T to execute a long range attack, or S to execute a short range attack. You can keep attacking as long as you have AP (Action Points), which is indicated in the blue meter near your character's portrait. You may stop attacking by hitting X. Each turn you get 4 AP (Unless you're under the influence of certain items or effects). If you do not use all of your AP in one turn, it will carry over to the next turn. Regular attacks take 2 AP each. Sometimes you may score a critical hit, which does more damage than usual. In a typical turn, you might hit T and then S, thus doing two attacks and using all of your 4 AP for that turn. KOS-MOS and Ziggy both have special weapons that can be used by hitting O when you have 6 AP. __Deathblows__ If you have enough AP, you can execute a Deathblow by doing a regular attack and then hitting O. Check out your Deathblow menu to view and edit which attack combinations are associated with which Deathblows. As an example, on one turn you might hit T to do a regular, long-range attack, then hit X to stop attacking and let your AP carry over. On the next turn, you might hit S, S, O, using all of your 6 AP to unleash a LW Speed Deathblow. If you upgrade a Deathblow to HI speed, then it can be used on a turn in which you only have 4 AP, because it can be set to be used after only one regular attack. Check out 2.10: Menu Translation for more info on how to set up your Deathblows. __Menu__ Instead of attacking on your turn, you can hit X to call up the menu. Hit X again to return to the attacks. The battle menu contains the following options: _ETHER_ These are your character's "spells". Choose an Ether, then choose a target, if required. This uses 4 AP. _ITEM_ This lets you use an item. Choose an item, then choose a target. This uses 3 AP. You can also choose a "W" item with T in order to use it on all characters, using up 6 AP and two of the item. _MOVE_ You can move to another location on the battlefield. This affects your attack and defense. Characters in the back row will not be able to use, or be hit by, physical attacks. This costs 2 AP. _AGWS_ Use this to board your AGWS. You will be prompted for a location where you would like to deploy. _GUARD_ This makes your character guard until her next turn. It costs 2 AP. __Boost__ The Boost gauge is the red gauge near your AP gauge. It fills up as you attack, and once full increments the number next to it and empties again. Boost allows you to slip a character's turn into the round preemptively. When a character has at least one boost gauge filled, and is not already present in the turn queue at the bottom right, you can hold down R2 and a Boost icon will show up. Eligible characters will show up around it, and you then hit the appropriate button(S is left, T is up, O is right). That character's icon will then be inserted into the queue immediately after the current turn. __Counter-Boost__ Some enemies have the ability to counter-boost. This means that they have a chance to automatically boost when attacked. The enemy's portrait will appear in a pink boost circle rather than a yellow one, and whether the enemy is already in the turn queue does not affect this ability. This means that one enemy can go twice in a row. This sucks, but the cool thing is that your characters can gain this ability as well. The items Samurai Heart and Revenge Power are both counter-boost items, and the corresponding skills can be drawn from them. Neat! __G.T.W.__ At the bottom right of the screen is a blue field called the G.T.W., or Group Turn Window. It shows a diagram of the battlefield, including all allies and enemies. The currently targeted ally or enemy will be indicated by a line, and by having its portrait slightly offset in the queue. Enemies are indicated as type B (biological), M (mechanical), or G (Gnosis). If you are able to see enemies' hit points, they will be displayed here as well. The queue of portraits in the middle indicates in what order characters will act during this round of battle. At the beginning of a round, icons are put into the queue according to one's speed attribute. As turns are taken, the icons file out the left side of the queue. Keep an eye on who will be taking the next turn, as you might be able to kill a monster right before it attacks, or you might find reassurance in knowing that your healing character will have the next turn. Also keep in mind that the queue can be altered by the use of Boosts, by both you and your enemies. __Event Slot__ Next to the G.T.W. is a little slot-machine looking thingie that rolls over each turn. It has 4 possible settings, each of which affects in a different way the combat that takes place during that turn. The little orange burst increases the effectiveness of critical hits. The gold ring-looking thing increases the rate at which your Boost gauge fills. The coin looking thing gives you extra Tp and Ep points with each kill made on that turn. The amount of points received varies, with a high chance of getting x2 points, sometimes x4 points, and rarely x10 points. The blank one does nothing. +------------------------------------+ | 2.3: ATTACKS/DEATHBLOWS | +------------------------------------+ As translated by Ashley __シオン / Shion__ _Normal Attacks_ S: フェストナックル / Knuckle Fist T: クラッカー / Cracker S,S: ブレイクキック / Break Kick S,T: スタンショック / Stun Shock T,S: スピンキック / Spin Kick T,T: ボム / Bomb _Deathblows_ イナズマブロー / Inazuma Blow (lightning attack) スペルレイ / Spell Ray (laser attack) スロットシュート / Slot Shot (change the cartridge and fire a more intense shot) バックファイア / Backfire (an intense fire attack) エーテルボンバー / Ether Bomb (a single targeted Bio or Gnosis enemy will now take x2 damage from ether attacks) グラビティブロー / Gravity Blow (slows Bio and Gnosis enemies) スペールブレード / Spell Blade (the laser hurts) レインブレード / Rain Blade (it rains blades) __KOS-MOS__ _Normal Attacks_ S: BLOW T: BLASTER S,S: S-SLOT S,T: SWORD T,S: NEEDLE T,T: BLASTER O: F-GSHOT 12 Ep 00 Ap 6 (12 ammo left; requires 0 EP, requires 6 AP) _Deathblows_ R- BLADE (pyhsical attack) R- CANNON (ether attack) R- DRILL (physical attack) X- BUSTER (ether attack) S- CHAIN (causes a random status) R- SPAINE ((should be SPINE) physical attack) R- DRAGON (physical attack) __バージル / Virgil__ _Normal Attacks_ S: ドッキ / Knock T: ライフルショット / Rifle Shot __Ziggurat8__ _Normal Attacks_ S: ハイキック / High Kick T: レーザナイフ / Laser Knife O: BMP55SX 02 Ep 04 Ap 6 (attacks all enemies) S,S: ジャックブレード / Jack Blade S,T: バースとブロー / Burst Blow T,S: ジャックブレード / Jack Blade T,T: レーゼーナイフ / Laser Knife _DeathBlows_ サウザーバースト / Souther Burst (physical & fire attack) ライオネルハンド / Lionel Hand (ether & thunder attack) メテオショット / Meteor Shot (ether & fire attack) ストームブレイド / Storm Blade クロスランサー / Cross Lancer ネックハンター / Neck Hunter (ether & thunder attack) ヘルファイアー / Hell Fire (physical & fire attack) __M.O.M.O.__ _Normal Attacks_ S: ビートロッド / Beat Rod T: ライトニングベル / Lightning Bell S,S: 2ビートロッド / Beat Rod x2 S,T: スピンロッド / Spin Rod T,S: ミラージュキック / Mirage Kick T,T: フラワーストーム / Flower Storm _DeathBlows_ プチメテオ / Petite Meteor (physical attack) ワインドミキサー / Wind Mixer (ether attack) ノック・ザ・ドア / Knock the Door (ether attack) スターキャノン / Star Cannon (physical attack) エンジェルアロー / Angel Arrow (ether attack) レアハンター / Rare Hunter (no attack; can only perform after transformation) ラブリーレイ / Lovely Ray (ether attack; can only perform after transformation) ダークロッド / Dark Rod (physical attack; Gnosis will be turned into an item) __ケイオス / chaos__ _Normal Attacks_ S: 気掌 / Calm Palm T: 発気 / Return Fire S,S: 連環気掌 / The Inner Circles' Palm S,T: 斬気掌 / Slicing Palm T,S: 突気掌 / Piercing Palm T,T: 二連発気 / Shotgun Blast _DeathBlows_ 百気掌 / Hundred Chi Palm (physical attack) 円月飛掌 / Flying Moon Circle Palm (ether attack) 雷斬掌 / Thunder Slice Palm (physical & thunder attack) 菩薩掌 / Oath of Buddha Palm (ether attack) 波動掌 / Surge Palm (ether attack; cause machine-type's pilot to faint) 氷紋掌 / Dynasty of Ice Palm (ether & ice attack) 戒魔 / Demon Palm (Gnosis may leave battle) 神槍脚 / God's Spear (physical attack) __Jr.__ _Normal Attacks_ S: ライトシングル / Right Single T: レフトシングル / Left Single S,S: ライトダブル / Right Double S,T: レフトスナップ / Left Snap T,S: ライトスナップ / Right Snap T,T: レフトダブル / Left Double _DeathBlows_ 闘いの前奏曲 / Battle Prelude (physical attack) 神秘の小夜曲 / Rune Serenade (ether attack) 嵐のワルツ / Storm Waltz (physical attack) 最後の交響曲 / Last Symphony (physical attack) 神秘の夜想曲 / Mystique Nocturne (ether attack) 天使の鎮魂歌 / Angelic Requiem (physical attack) 魂の狂詩曲 / Soul Rhapsody (forces Gnosis to, how to say... eat it) +------------------------------------+ | 2.4: STATUS EFFECTS | +------------------------------------+ The various effects that can be inflicted in battle, as translated by Ashley. Please note: In your journey to create Erdekaiser you will also get 3 other ethers, they are Thrones Blade, Seraphim Bird, and Dominion Tank. Now once you have all the parts Hakase will try to create Erdekaiser and there will be a small accident. Now go to the Bar and find Scott. Doing this you will get the Ether "Star Wind" and the Deathblow "Rare Hunter". Also use MOMO as the lead character and inspect the glittering "wall" (in the Song of Nephilim, the second tower 6th floor). Doing this you will get the Ether "Star Light" and the Deathblow "Lovely Ray". Again use MOMO as the lead character and enter the upstairs open window of Kookai Foundation bar and defeat Mintia, (get there by going upstairs at the hotel, outside and across the canopy). Doing this you will get the Deathblow "Dark Rod" (MINTIA TIPS, submitted by Tom): 1 - Mintia can only absorb HP from someone who's position in the middle row. That means, if nobody occupies the middle row, then Mintia Monster's Blue Ray won't be used at all. 2 - Mintia uses that "push back" attack to push someone into the back row. If there's somebody already occupying that space, they stay in the front row. Saves a turn moving back to the front row. 3 - Mintia also hates men and attacked them with avengence. __ケイオス / chaos__ 守りの衣 / Protective Armor (04 Ep, Ether attacks are 25% down for 5 turns) 癒しの雫 / Healing Rain (06 Ep, everyone recovers a small amount of Hp) 氷の羽根 / Ice Sliver (04 Ep, ice attack) 浄化の風 / Purifying Wind (06 Ep, clears all status affects) 炎の羽根 / Fire Plume (04 Ep, fire attack) 雷の羽根 / Lighting Bolt (04 Ep, thunder attack) 最愛の徒 / For the Love of a Friend (50 Ep, completely revives and restores full health to a ko'd character, note: can only be used once per battle) 真冶戒 / Holy Commandment (8 Ep, the amount an enemy can heal itself will now be halved) 天変地異 / God's hand (12 Ep, enemies loss a turn) 光と翼 / Light and Wings (12 Ep, attacks and clears all status affects) __Jr.__ サイコアーム / Psycho Arm (04 Ep, physical attack up) エーテルフレア / Ether Flare (04 Ep, ether attack up 25%) ダンディズム / Damnedism(?) While AGWS have their own set of stats, their ether power, ether defense, hit rate and evade rate are equal to their pilot. So, don't ignore your character's stats. (The VX series AGWS also have a anti-ether armor coat which gives an extra 4 or 8 EARM. I guess that's why they're shiny.) -Upgrade! If you have the cash (which is no problem if you're good at poker), it goes without saying that you should keep all your AGWS's as updated as possible. Revisit the Dock Colony and Foundation parts shops as much as possible, since they get new wares after story events. However, if you know you won't be using a certain AGWS for a while (or ever...) you can forgo upgrades and save some money. -Mini-maximize! The attack power of all non-ether weapons is related to the AGWS's DPOW. So, equipping a pair of axes will increase the damage done by your missile launcher too. Ether weapons depend entirely on the pilot. So, it's best to equip either all physical attack weapons or all ether weapons to minimize ineficiency and maximize power. -Metagame! Think about what enemies you'll be facing and equip your mechs accordingly. Fighting large groups of annoying soldiers? Put on some missile launchers. Up against a boss with strong defense? Try beam rifles. -W-ACT! Having two weapons with the W-Act ability is often your best bet. Because a double attack combines the damage of the two weapons before figuring the enemy's defense, you'll end up doing more damage than with two regular attacks (especially if you get a critical hit). Plus, double attacks use only one ammo point and no EP. -Speed! One of the biggest weaknesses of AGWS is their speed is lower than most characters. Speed boosting accessories should be a major priority, as well as keeping the weight down by going easy on the heavy weapons. AGWS also can't boost either, unless you equip the B-MAX gear, and even then your AGWS boost guage still won't increase when attacking. -Heal! Repair at shops when you get the chance (including after every frame upgrade); it's only 100G. Repair kits are available later in the game if you know the right shops, but be sure to get a Guard Recover for each AWGS you use. These repair 10% of your mech's max HP every time you Guard. Guarding then becomes a viable strategy, since you're healing, taking less damage, and saving up AP for a double attack the next round! ____BATTLES WHERE AGWS ARE PARTICULARLY USEFUL____ -Straight physical attackers. If you're keeping your AGWS upgraded, their defense will be much higher than your characters. Feel free to laugh as the soldiers or cobolts plink your mechs for 0 damage. -Status attackers. If you're up against enemies who use poison or some other nasty affliction every round and you don't have protection, get in your AGWS first turn. You'll be immune to almost all normal status effects. There are a few statuses that can affect your AGWS, but hardly any enemies that I've seen actually use them. -Boss inside the Giant Gnosis. Once you take care of his two little buddies, the Gargoyle powers up and launches some nasty attacks, and at this point your characters probably aren't strong enough to survive very long. Hop in your AGWS, and assuming you've upgraded them the fight is a sinch. -The church boss in Encephalon. Tiamat is the trickiest fight in the game, bar none. You're stuck with three characters who can use AGWS, so you might as well take advantage of that. First, equip their AGWS with a Guard Recover and a Guard Cleaner, and have everyone board their bots as soon as the battle begins. Have Chaos do most of the attacking at first because he won't be counterattacked. Finally, just kill him with both Shion and Jr.; it still counts if they're in their AGWS. -The boss in Nephilim's Song. Shimeon has very high attack and defense power, so you'll probably want to use your AGWS at some point. It doesn't do any status attacks, but it has a very nasty beam weapon you may be familiar with, so equip accordingly. ____COMPLETE AGWS LISTING____ __VX SERIES__ _VX-4000_ Height: 4.12m Weight: 2.63t Transfer Generator: 19.7 DSSS rating: 4.8ms Description: Buy at the Dock Colony for 50000G (available as soon as you get to explore the Kookai Foundation). It cannot equip heavy weapons like rifles, but has 7 AGL and good ether defense. Equipment: Starts with a pair of ER-VX electron shooters which only it can use. They're useful against mechanical enemies, so you may opt to keep them. Also comes with a ECM (electronic Countermeasures) pod ECM1-VX, which is useful for inflicting status effects on machines. Optimal equipment: Your options are a bit limited. After Nephilim's Song appears, you'll be able to buy an ECM pod which affects all enemies (ECM2-VX) and the DEF-VX Ether Shield. Equipping either one deprives you of a potential weapon, so choose wisely. _VX-7000_ Height: 4.98m Weight: 3.24t Transfer Generator: 24.4 DSSS rating: 4.3ms Description: Jr.'s AGWS. One of Vector's military mechs, customized with a Logical Drive. Usually has the most HP of the 3 default AGWS. Equipment: Starts with a pair of HG45VX handguns. They have plenty of ammo and allow a W-Act every 3rd round. Obviously, get the uprated HG75VX handguns at the Foundation shop when you first arrive. Optimal equipment: The spread lancer (LW-VX2) is exclusive to this AGWS and its strongest weapon, but it has disadvantages as well. If your pilot has weak Ether you're better off with something else. A pair of grenade launchers (GRD20AG) has the same AGL penalty and might suit your fancy. _VX-9000_ Height: 4.95m Weight: 3.01t Transmit Generator: 21.0 DSSS rating: 4.0ms Description: Used by a solider from the Durandal [NPC]. Accompanies Mary and Jr. on their raid of an enemy battleship. Equipment: Has a pair of SWD32VX swords. Equipment cannot be changed. _VX-10000_ Height: 4.95m Weight: 3.11t Transmit Generator: 22.5 DSSS rating: 3.8ms Description: Shion's AGWS. Supposedly built as a multi-purpose mech for the common market. Slightly lower HP than the other default AGWS, and average in its abilities. Equipment: Starts with a SWD21AG and an SMG99AG. I recommend selling the machine gun and getting a second sword, but as long as you equip them in pairs any weapon should do fine. If your driver has high Ether power, I recommend a pair of beam arms later. Optimal equipment: Personally I prefer a pair of beam swords, but since this mech doesn't have an "ultimate weapon" to work with it's up to you. Be sure to add a chaff launcher (CB85VX) as well. _VX-20000_ Height: 5.22m Weight: 4.25t Transmit Generator: 27.1 DSSS rating: 5.2ms Description: Mary's AGWS [NPC]. Big and mean. Has 1200HP and high defense. Why exactly does Mary have one of the most bad-ass AGWS? Equipment: A pair of LG24VX beam rifles. Equipment cannot be changed. __AG series__ _AG-01_ Height: 4.40m Weight: 3.80t Transmit Generator: 18.63 DSSS rating: 6.8ms Desciption: Simple all-purpose mech. Used by soldiers on the Woglinde. Non- playable (which is good, since they get trashed so easily). _AG-02_ Height: 4.48m Weight: 3.97t Transmit Generator: 20.11 DSSS rating: 6.8ms Description: Chaos's AGWS. Variant of the AG-01. Also used by Virgil. Well- rounded and seems best suited for rifles and beam weapons. Equipment: Starts with a pair of LG10AG rifles. These are OK, but if you have the cash, upgrade to a pair of SMG32VX. Be sure to get a pair of LG24VX rifles when you can; they're good weapons and you'll never see them later. Optimal equipment: This is the only AGWS that can use the SHB67AG shield rifle, so you might want to try it. It's not that powerful, but it seems to add significantly to defense when Guarding. I also recommend a BL24AG beam launcher or LG100VX long beam rifle. After Nephilim's Song appears, you'll be able to buy the ultimate fan-service weapon: AIRD-AG2 Aerods. They're powerful, but limit your AGWS in speed and other equipment. _AG-04_ Height: 4.20m Weight: 3.56t Transmit Generator: 16.0 DSSS rating: 6.8ms Description: Buy at the Dock Colony for 80000G (available as soon as Nephilim's Song appears). Though it looks a bit odd, it has very high HP and attack power as well as 7 AGL. Equipment: Starts with "hands" (it punches enemies). Obviously you want to upgrade to those gyrosaucers (WCT02AG4) ASAP. It can only use a few different weapons though. Optimal Equipment: You don't have much selection here, so get the pair of drill claws (DLCOAG4). You also might want to throw on a missile pod (SMP53AG) since this bot can take the AGL hit easily and needs the versatility. _AG-05_ Height: 4.80m Weight: 5.69t Transmit Generator: 22.8 DSSS rating: 6.8ms Description: Buy at the Dock Colony for a whopping 300000G (available when Proto Merkabah appears). Huge and evil, with 6000HP and the best offense and defense, but has only 5 AGL. Makes many of us nostalgic for Gears. Optimal equipment: There are a ton of weapons exclusive to this monster, but it can only equip 1 weapon in most of these cases. -A pair of vulcan cannons (HGG-AG5). They do around 700-900 damage on a normal hit against the final boss, and can W-Act. Highly recommended. -A warhammer (HMP-AG5). It adds a lot to your power and does even more damage than the vulcans. Good for long battles, but lacks versatility. -An artillery cannon (LC-AG5). Probably the most powerful AGWS weapon available. Expect a few thousand damage per hit. However, it only has a couple of shots per battle, gives -1 AGL, and needs 6AP to use. -A massive beam cannon (BBC-AG5). If your driver has very high Ether and EP, it is potentially even stronger than the artillery cannon. Also takes 6AP to use and a -1 AGL penalty, and eats up EP like other beam weapons. -Missile launchers. The arm-mounted ones (HMP-AG5) have 2 shots each, and no W- act. The back-mounted pod (BMP-AG5) has only 1 shot but that one shot will likely kill any normal enemy group you're fighting. For both power and versatility, your best bet is to equip the BMP and either a HMP or a HGG. ____AGWS stats after final upgrade____ (completely unequipped and driverless) Name FHP DPOW PARM EARM AGL VX-10000 2320 70 104 4 6 VX-7000 2700 76 110 4 6 VX-4000 2100 68 98 8 7 AG-02 2400 73 106 0 6 AG-04 2920 84 109 0 7 AG-05 6000 130 120 0 5 ____AGWS EQUIPMENT LIST____ Type abbreviations: SE = single enemy, AE = all enemies, AA = all allies.
